Patches from Hytone Lodge 416, Merged 1992

I grew up in Southern West Virginia in the tiny lodge of HYTONE 416. Hytone Lodge was chartered to the Appalachian Council # 707, in Bluefield West Virginia. The lodge was originally named Wolf Lodge and was chartered to the Southern West Virginia Area Council in 1949. The Order of the Arrow was a summer camp activity. Wolf Lodge did not issue any patches or insignia. Prior to Wolf Lodge, the Tribe of Gimogash existed in the Council and was a summer camp activity at Camp Roland. Below is a image of a letter explaining Gimogash and a picture of the patch. When the Appalachian Council merged with the Southern West Virginia Area Council in 1956, Hytone Lodge got its start. The lodge was always known for service and fellowship. Patches from Hytone lodge are always at a premium and are hard to come by as the lodge was small and did not issue many patches. In1992, the Appalachian Council merged with the Chief Cornstalk and Buckskin Councils. After the 1992 National Order of the Arrow Conference, two youth delegates from each of the three lodges came together in Beckley, West Virginia to merge the lodges into one. After 2 long days at a Beckley Hotel, Chi-Hoota-Wei Lodge 617 was formed from the three previous lodges.

This page is to showcase patches from Hytone Lodge so former members and collectors may know what patches were issued by the lodge. It also identifies the Lodge Chiefs and Vigil Honor members for historical reasons.

This images are patches from Hytone Lodge.

The first flap was issued in 1957. It was used until 1963 when members decided to change the wolf on the flap. Several members of the lodge wanted to be on the committee. Charlie Troup long time scouter and professional advisor for the lodge, tells the story that they put up a pup tent. They decided that only the number of scouts that could get into the tent could be on the committee. Remember, they intended to only change the wolf but instead they changed the entire flap based on an unknown flap owned by another scouter. I would like to point out that I do not agree with some of the dates and order of issue in the bluebook. I have pointed out to a couple of authors these errors but they seem very reluctant to change any of their information. I did get them to change the error on the lodge neckerchief. Hytone lodge only issued one light blue neckerchief with the S1 flap silkscreened on the corner. The Blue Book listed two neckerchiefs. After being presented with evidence, they did change the bluebook to say there were MVE's of only one neckerchief.

F1 First Issue

S1a First Solid  Note the Rhododndron flowers at the bottom of the flap. The Rhododendron is the state flower of West Virginia. The flower appeared on all the restricted flaps.

S2 There are multiple varieties of this patch. No two are the same, they are all flawed to some degree. We only issued this patch at one ordeal. The rest were sent back to the manufacturer. They should be very rare but I see alot of them on the net. We suspect the manufacturer resold them.

hytones3a.jpg

S3a   This was the issue I wore as a boy in 1972. These are listed out of order. The "S2" really came out after this patch.

hytones3b.jpg

S2b This is the first patch issued after sending back the white letter mistakes.

hytones4.jpg

S4  These were trading patches. Hytone lodge had a no trading, 2 flap per life policy.  We issued these so we could trade flaps with the other lodges in West Virginia. They were numbered in red ink on the back of each flap.

hytones5.jpg

S5  flaps were the last in the Original S series. They are easily identified by the vertical lines near the bottom.

hytones6a.jpg

S6a  This was the second issue of the trading flap. The wolf's head really turned out bad.

hytones6b.jpg

S6b Another trading flap reorder, note the mountains came back purple.

hytones7.jpg

S7  Poor old wolf.  We call this the skunk patch. It sure doesn't look like a wolf.

hytones8.jpg

40th anniversary flap. This is a tough issue. I personally handled the ordering of this flap. There are only 100 of them because they were a preorder.

hytones9.jpg

S9 This was a combination of the NOAC for 90 and the 75th Anniversary of the Order of the Arrow. Same old ugly skunk head as the S7.

hytones10.jpg

S10  There are only one run of these, so they are a pretty tough piece to come by.

hytones11.jpg

S11 Green Arrow and Red Fletchings, there are 100 of these so they are very tough to find. I'm not sure why we changed the arrow color.

hytones12.jpg

S12 Last regular issue for Hytone Lodge. These were very popular for uniforn wear and trading. There were a couple of orders so they are not too hard to find.

hytones13.jpg

S13 92 NOAC and the last event for the lodge. This was sort of a death flap, if you look real close you will see 1949 to 1992 ghosted in the clouds.

R1 This was actually a summer camp patch. There is another one exactly like the R1 except the OA and the arrow are missing. The one's with OA were just given to OA members.
